Charizard
- Most Useful Against: Erika, Bruno, Blue
Charmander has the hardest start among the three starter Pokemon in FireRed and LeafGreen since both Brock and Misty, the first two Gym leaders, are hard counters. After this initial hiccup, Charizard quickly turns into one of the strongest Pokemon in FRLG with great stats and even better coverage.
Primeape
- Most Useful Against: Brock, Giovanni, Bruno
To deal with Brock and Misty, there are a few Pokemon in the early routes that can be of great help.
- Mankey: Fighting-type moves are a direct answer to Brock’s Geodude and Onix.
- Oddish/Bellsprout: Grass-type moves are useful against both Brock and Misty, and can make the early game a breeze.
Although Mankey only offers neutral damage to Misty’s Water-type Pokemon, Primeape is much more useful overall than Vileplume/Victreebel, which is why investing in Mankey early instead of the Grass-types pays dividends down the line.
Nidoking
- Most Useful Against: Lt. Surge, Koga, Blaine, Agatha, Bruno
Nidoran doesn’t really offer much for Brock or Misty, but it comes online by the time you get to Lt. Surge, and with access to Dig via TM28, it steamrolls this Gym with ease. TM28 is awarded to you as part of the core story progression in Cerulean City and is impossible to miss.
Additionally, you can evolve Nidoran into Nidoking very, very quickly by using a Moon Stone found on Mt. Moon, which gives you access to a fully evolved, end-game-ready Pokemon very early on in the game. Nidoking can essentially solo the entire first half of the region thanks to its incredible coverage and great stats that only get more ridiculous as time goes on.
Jolteon
- Most Useful Against: Lorelei, Lance, Blue
In Celadon, you can get Eevee for free as a Gift Pokemon. Evolving it into Jolteon is a simple matter of purchasing a Thunder Stone from the conveniently located Celadon Department Store for 2,100 Poke Dollars. Jolteon is the strongest non-legendary Electric-type Pokemon in Kanto, and the best Eeveelution besides.
Lapras
- Most Useful Against: Blaine, Giovanni, Lance
Like Jolteon, Lapras can be obtained as another gift Pokemon from an NPC in the Silph Co. building in Saffron City. Its dual Water/Ice typing is perfect, because not only does this mean it can solo Blaine’s team in the Cinnabar Gym, it also means you have the ultimate answer to Lance’s Dragon-types when you face off against in the Elite Four.
Snorlax
- Most Useful Against: Agatha, Blue, Sabrina
Snorlax is an all-around menace thanks to its disgustingly good stats and impossible to get through bulk. With the combination of Rest and Sleep Talk, this Pokemon is essentially unkillable. Return is the highest damage-dealing Normal-type move without any drawbacks there is in FireRed and LeafGreen, provided, of course, you have maximum friendship with Snorlax.
On the other hand, Body Slam’s ability to inflict Paralyze can come in handy in many situations. An alternative to Body Slam is Shadow Ball, which can be taught to Snorlax via Technical Machine. The only reason we haven’t given it to Snorlax in this team is that Nidoking wants to learn this move as well. But if you have something else in mind for Nidoking, Shadow Ball would naturally go to Snorlax.
