Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Will Be a Whole New Game
When it comes to remakes or remasters, there are typically two camps of thought. Visual upgrades are a given, but some fans and developers prefer small, yet meaningful changes, while others prefer a full-blown overhaul. More often than not, it depends on the game, and the upcoming remake, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, is leaning toward the latter.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is obviously a big deal for Ubisoft, especially amid the shifting landscape of the industry. It’s an important moment for Ubisoft, for the new Assassin’s Creed leadership team, and for fans, as even fans who feel burned by the company are excited by the prospect. Unfortunately, beyond the remake/remaster camp, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is caught between fans who prefer the more linear, action-adventure, parkour-oriented style of the original games and the open-world style a la Assassin’s Creed Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows.
Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced Could Look More Like AC Shadows Instead of OG Black Flag
And while there are hints toward respecting the original gameplay and foundation of Black Flag, it sounds more and more like it’ll be a whole new game. That includes overhauling complete systems and introducing new or previously cut features.
Ubisoft recently confirmed the AC: Black Flag Resynced title that leaked online weeks ago, if not months ago, and it is believed to be releasing before March 2027, even after waves of delays hit all the Assassin’s Creed games. Other rumors and leaks suggest that it’s a massive overhaul, complete with the following:
Some of this is exciting: new story content would be a big boon for fans, especially as Resynced likely ties into the Animus Hub. More details and improved graphics (a given) could make it look better than others, while the Modern Day segments (or lack thereof) will likely never have a consensus among fans. But some of these might raise alarms for many others.
New world activities could imply adopting the open-world structure of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and the later AC games. Of course, Black Flag had its share of this, but it’s hard to imagine adding more to it without bloating the sandbox unless it takes that more open-world approach. Furthermore, it’s yet to be confirmed what “RPG progression” entails, but that sounds more akin to the later games than anything.
Open World RPG vs. Action-Adventure Game with Lite RPG Elements
In contrast, the original Black Flag had more foundational progression systems like ship upgrades and gear crafting, but it lacked modern RPG elements like damage numbers, level-gated enemies, or gear stats. It is largely believed that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will overhaul the game with full-blown open-world RPG mechanics, including loot, gear stats, and hitbox-driven combat. The original featured fixed weapon types with minor upgrades, timing- and counter-focused combat, and limited playstyle choice.
Meanwhile, AC Black Flag Resynced is more likely to feature modular, level-locked weapon upgrades, Skill Tree-influenced combat, and true RPG progression and playstyle influence. Which is better is ultimately up to the player, but if Ubisoft goes as far with these RPG mechanics as expected, then there’s no denying it’ll be a different game.
AC4: Black Flag is many things, but an apt description is perhaps an action-adventure sandbox game with lite RPG elements, with lite doing some serious heavy lifting. It sounds like AC: Black Flag Resynced could be a bona fide open-world RPG, and that drastically changes the experience. Ubisoft has yet to show anything and may not for a few months, but given the numerous rumors and leaks surrounding Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, it’s easy to see how changes like this could prove true.
