Heartopia Issues Official Statement and Apology
Heartopia developer XD Inc. has issued an official statement and apology after removing an in-game NPC animation that drew backlash from players. The move may close the door on the scene itself, but it has not ended fan criticism over how the studio chose to explain the Heartopia controversy.
The original issue centers on a sequence tied to one of Heartopia‘s poison mushrooms. Specifically, XD recently added a quest in which Kapil, a Black NPC, accidentally ingests a mushroom and begins hooting and dancing. The animation sparked controversy among players, with some arguing that it evoked racist comparisons to monkeys rather than conveying the intended effect of simple disorientation.

Heartopia Dev Apologizes for Kapil Animation, Says It Didn’t Intend for It To Have Racist Connotations
The Heartopia developer responded to the backlash with a statement posted to the game’s official Discord server in early March 2026. An XD representative explained that the intent behind the animation was to illustrate vertigo and a general “loss of bodily control” that commonly stems from poisoning. Following the initial wave of player complaints, the Chinese studio removed the Kapil animation. “We sincerely apologize to anyone who may have felt offended,” the developer said.

The early wave of social media reactions to the official statement suggest some Heartopia players believe the apology was inadequate. “Nowhere in this apology do they mention the racist undertones that scene had,” writes Reddit user vRileyyy. “THAT is the problem.” Echoing that sentiment, Reddit user SteamBat_ said Kapil also seemingly “speaks like a caveman” in at least one version of the game, casting further doubt on whether the developer intended to “accurately depict the symptoms of dizziness” by making him howl and dance like a monkey.
The continued player backlash appears to be exacerbated by XD’s decision to crack down on follow-up questions on the game’s official Discord server. “Why even apologize if you’re just going to silence people trying to understand the issue,” asked Reddit user Mars_Maiden in one highly upvoted comment. They further called the behavior “insane” and suggested it implies Heartopia is “not a safe space” for people of color. XD did not provide any follow-up comments clarifying either its apology or the moderation decisions made after it was issued. The Discord crackdown may be an attempt to steer discussion in the general channels back on track, but even if that is the case, some fans argue it should have been handled more transparently.
Why even apologize if you’re just going to silence people trying to understand the issue?
Reports from players on social media suggest moderators even deleted or hid the feedback channel on Heartopia‘s official Discord server amid the backlash following the Kapil animation apology. Game Rant was unable to confirm this, as the channel, called #suggestion, appears to be online on the English version of the server as of the early morning hours (ET) of March 7. The server itself has nearly 860,000 members as of this writing. It is unclear what proportion of its moderation team consists of XD employees or contractors, as opposed to volunteer moderators, making it difficult to determine whether any effort to remove player inquiries about the Kapil animation originated directly from the studio.
Inclusivity concerns of this sort are something that can be particularly consequential for a cozy life sim that markets itself as a place of creativity, freedom, and social play. This particular controversy arrives mere weeks after some Heartopia players criticized the game’s gacha mechanics and the use of AI-generated snapshot images in puzzles. Despite the vocal backlash online, the offensive animation does not appear to have significantly affected the game’s player numbers. On Steam, Heartopia continues to peak at roughly 45,000 concurrent players every day. That is below the highs it reached in February but broadly in line with its launch-month performance in January 2026.
