Xbox Ridiculed Over New ‘Microslop’ Policy

By newsgame

Microsoft is facing ridicule due to its recent attempts to curb the use of “Microslop” and some other related terms across the Xbox App and on at least one of its official Discord servers. Though the drama started outside of the Xbox ecosystem, it has now spilled into it, creating a bit of a Streisand effect in the process.

Microsoft has been positioning artificial intelligence as one of its core strategic layers since the mid-2010s. Some of its biggest moves on this front stem from its partnership with OpenAI, started in 2019 and deepened in 2023 with a new multi-year, multi-billion-dollar investment. 2023 is also the year when the company started implementing AI tech into a wide variety of its products in the form of Bing Chat, which was later rebranded to Microsoft Copilot. Yet Microsoft’s AI push has not been universally welcomed. Among some users, especially in online PC and gaming communities, the company’s expanding reliance on Copilot branding and AI add-ons has fueled open ridicule, including the spread of the term “Microslop.”

Microsoft’s “Microslop” Filter Backfires as the Joke Spreads

In early March 2026, Microsoft banned the word “Microslop” from the official Copilot Discord server. After Windows Latest picked up on the filter, users on the servers started experimenting with different variations of the word, replacing letters with numbers or posting similar pejoratives such as “Sloppysoft” and “Microstop No-pilot.” The ridicule eventually spread to social media, including Reddit, Bluesky, and X, after users realized that “Microslop” was even banned in the Xbox App. The drama intensified when access to parts of the Copilot Discord server were later restricted, albeit temporarily. “The harder they push, the harder we want to use it,” one highly upvoted user wrote on Reddit.

“The Copilot Discord channel has recently been targeted by spammers attempting to disrupt and overwhelm the space with harmful content not related to Copilot,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a prepared statement, adding that the company first responded with “temporary filters” because the effort was initially centered on spamming “walls of text.” However, this proved unsuccessful. “We have since made the decision to temporarily lock down the server while we work to implement stronger safeguards to protect users from this harmful spam and help ensure the server remains a safe, usable space for the community,” the official statement concludes.

The vocal consumer opposition to Microsoft’s growing AI focus has recently even sparked some criticism aimed at the company’s gaming division, where Asha Sharma replaced Phil Spencer as the CEO of Microsoft Gaming in late February 2026. Sharma spent the previous two years as the President of CoreAI, an internal engineering organization dedicated to developing and maintaining the company’s foundational AI infrastructure and tools. With no experience in the gaming sphere, some fans interpreted Sharma’s appointment as a signal that Xbox may be leaning harder into AI moving forward, whether that makes sense or not.

Nevertheless, a subsequent interview saw the new Xbox CEO insist that she has no tolerance for “bad AI” or “soulless AI slop” content. Sharma reportedly made similar assurances as part of her prior introductory message to staff. The executive subsequently promised to do everything in her power to facilitate “the return of Xbox,” which has been losing ground to PlayStation in the console space since the advent of the Xbox One era in 2013.

Many details about what this promised return will entail remain unclear. However, Sharma did name one of them in a March 5 social media post in which she revealed the codename of the next-generation Xbox console: Project Helix. The upcoming device—or perhaps family of devices—will be capable of playing both Xbox and PC games, the executive confirmed. Sharma also said she looks forward to discussing the new hardware generation with developers at this year’s GDC, scheduled to kick off in San Francisco next Monday, March 9. Whether that means GDC 2026 will bring additional consumer-facing news about Project Helix remains unclear.
