I Think I’ve Figured Out What Overwatch 2 is Doing With the Story

Overwatch 2 story speculation and potential plot spoilers ahead.

Overwatch 2 recently revealed Vendetta, a sword-wielding gladiator with chips on both of her shoulders. While the new hero is making history as the first dedicated melee DPS hero, what makes her even more groundbreaking is her ties to the lore. As the daughter of Antonio Giordani, a former Talon executive killed by Blackwatch, Vendetta has a score to settle with both sides of the Overwatch-Talon conflict. It certainly seems like Overwatch 2 is setting up Vendetta as the next major antagonist of Future Earth.

But it just might go deeper than that. From context clues, short stories, and leaks, evidence suggests Overwatch 2‘s first melee damage hero might be at the center of a massive shakeup to the lore. Though most of this is speculation, I think Vendetta is going to rise as a third faction in the conflict between Talon and Overwatch, recruiting several of the newer heroes to her side in the process. While I could be wrong, there might be a grand Overwatch 2 conspiracy years in the making unfolding before our very eyes.

While gamers may be debating snubs for Best Performance or Game of the Year, I can’t help but be most disappointed about Overwatch 2’s omission.

How Overwatch 2’s New Hero Might Change the Game

Vendetta’s cinematic trailer revealed that she is the daughter of Antonio Giordani, a former smuggler, arms dealer, and businessman for Talon. I say “former” because Gabriel Reyes kills him in the Retribution Overwatch Archives PvE mission from the original game, much to the chagrin of fellow Blackwatch operative Cole Cassidy. Along with Genji and Moira, Cassidy and Reyes stole Vendetta’s future, leading her down a path of vengeance.

As she came of age, Vendetta became a gladiator at the Colosseo known for taking down war machines with nothing but Palatine Fang, her hard-light greatsword. However, during Vendetta’s Overwatch 2 cinematic, she calls her entire act “a means to an end.” She plans to use her fame, glory, and – most importantly – her followers, to “take back everything that was stolen from us.”

It is clear Vendetta is planning some big moves, and some recent rumors corroborate that. According to a credible Overwatch 2 leaker, Vendetta will raid Talon HQ, slice off Doomfist’s arm, and kick him out a window in an upcoming cinematic. The hostile takeover ends with a surge of Talon activity, including their arrival at Overwatch’s hidden base. While this could end up being false, the leaker accurately predicted the Ramattra and Zenyatta comic, plus Vendetta’s name and her connection to Antonio before the reveal, which lends this story leak some credibility.

The new hero has reasons to hate both Talon and Overwatch; her father’s killer is now the Talon agent Reaper, and Moira is one of its executives. Meanwhile, Cassidy and Genji have both joined Overwatch, and Blackwatch was a branch of the original organization. Vendetta’s vendettas make perfect sense, and a hostile takeover of Talon would give her the resources to settle the score with both sides.

If these leaks are true, Doomfist may no longer be a part of Talon, and it is safe to assume Vendetta would wish to destroy Reaper for obvious reasons. Moira would likely be in trouble as well, given her complicity in Antonio’s death, but I could see Sigma and Maximilien, who are allegedly going to be present during the rumored cinematic, siding with Vendetta for survival and profit respectively. Sombra and Mauga aren’t directly loyal to Doomfist, so it would not be surprising if they joined Vendetta’s new Talon, while Widowmaker is a bit of a wildcard.

However, it would not be a stretch of imagination to picture Vendetta recruiting a handful of other newer heroes beyond Mauga. Illari, Hazard, and Freja are the Overwatch 2 heroes who seem like they would be perfect recruits for Vendetta’s new Talon, due to their shared themes of listlessness and resentment towards both Overwatch and Talon:

Illari is aimless and alone after the death of the other Inti warriors, and has had sympathetic interactions with Talon-aligned characters like Doomfist, Sombra, and Widowmaker.
Hazard was crippled in the crossfire between Talon and Overwatch, and stole the powerful vanadium isotope from Moira.
Freja, a former search and rescue operative of Overwatch, was left bitter when the world turned its back on the organization, and has taken bounties from Talon executive Maximilien.

Of the other new heroes added in Overwatch 2, Sojourn, Juno, and Wuyang have joined Overwatch, Ramattra leads Null Sector, and Junker Queen rules Junkertown. Kiriko, Lifeweaver, and Venture are affiliated with independent groups, but their heroic ideals make them unlikely to join Vendetta.

Illari has felt especially disconnected to the lore of Overwatch 2, only appearing once in the “Futures Past” story with Soldier: 76, so a fall to the dark side would let the character actually join the story in a tragic way that leaves room for future redemption.

This conspiracy could technically run even deeper. In the “Lucky Man” short story, it was revealed that a mysterious organization represented by an eye with three dots above and below was responsible for destroying Overwatch HQ – a secret faction that Sombra has tried to learn more about for years. It remains to be seen how this clandestine group would benefit from the chaos Vendetta would cause, but given they seem to profit from Overwatch and Talon’s conflict and failures, it would not be a stretch to see them getting involved.

Overwatch 2 is Preparing for a New Storyline

Beyond speculation and leaks, there is evidence within the game itself that something like this could happen. The Overwatch 2 mid-Season 19 update added an in-game Story feature that chronicles major cinematics and comics for players to easily read. Most of the lore drops from this year – including the cinematic where Freja meets with Maximilien – are available right now, with an empty spot for a new video labeled “Coming Soon” – right in the perfect spot for the leaked cinematic of Vendetta’s hostile takeover of Talon.

Ramattra and Null Sector have officially retreated, making way for a new major antagonist to take center stage.

If any of this ends up happening, the classic battle between Overwatch and Talon might be getting a new player in the form of Vendetta’s faction. Theoretically, the ousted members of Talon – including Doomfist, who could miraculously survive his encounter – might even have to team up with Overwatch to bring Vendetta down. This could be an absolutely huge setup for Overwatch 2’s lore… or I could be completely off base. Regardless, something big is coming in Overwatch 2 soon, and Vendetta seems like she’s going to be the catalyst.
