How to Evolve Haunter in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

By newsgame

If you’re looking for one of the strongest ‘mon you can get in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, then look no further than the ghost-type, Gengar. Gengar isn’t a Pokemon you’re going to find wandering around in the wild, however, so you’ll need to evolve Haunter to get it. This isn’t as straightforward as simply leveling Haunter to a specific level, either, and that’s what can trip up newer players to the series who want to complete their Pokedex. In this guide, I’ll explain how to get and evolve Gastly, as well as how to evolve Haunter in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen.

Learn about the fastest way to level up in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen with this guide with the best EXP farming locations and tips.

How to Get and Evolve Gastly in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

The easiest way to get Gastly is from the Pokemon Tower which can be found in the top right corner of Lavendar Town. You’ll reach Lavendar Town after beating Misty in Cerulean City and clearing Nugget Bridge. This will also require you to get Cut from the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City.

Once you’ve got this, head east from Cerulean City to route 9 and then route 10, before entering Rock Tunnel. If you haven’t already got Flash, you’ll need to catch 10 Pokemon and then speak to Professor Oak’s assistant on Route 2.

After leaving Rock Tunnel, you’ll come out on the south side of Route 10. Continue to head south and you’ll arrive in Lavendar Town.

Before you can head inside the Pokemon Tower, you’ll need to get the Silph Scope from the Rocket Hideout in Celadon City (west of Lavendar Town). This can be found behind the poster in the Celdaon Game Corner.

Gastly can be found on floors three, four, five, six, and seven of the Pokemon Tower and has a 90% encounter rate.

Once you’ve caught a Gastly, you’ll need to train it up to level 25 to evolve it into Haunter. You’ll typically find Gastlys in the range of level 13-19.

You can also catch a Haunter in the Pokemon Tower, on the same levels as Gastly, but they have a significantly lower encounter rate of between 1% and 6% on floors 3-6. On floor seven, they have a slightly higher encounter rate of 15%.

How to Evolve Haunter into Gengar in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

Haunter can only be evolved into a Gengar by trading it. This means you need to head to a Pokemon Center and go upstairs to the second floor. Now go to the Direct Corner and select the Trade Center option, where you can trade Pokemon with a friend.

If you’re playing the Nintendo Switch versions of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, this process may be slightly different due to trading potentially not being possible. As soon as we’ve confirmed the evolution process for Graveler in the Switch versions of the game, we’ll update this guide.

Select the friend you’d like to trade with, and then choose your Haunter. Once the trade is complete, your Haunter will begin evolving into Gengar. Now all you need to do is trade back Pokemon with your friend, and you’ll have your very own Gengar. This is a similar process that you’ll need to follow if you want to evolve Graveler into Golem, so it might be worth doing this at the same time while you’re trading with a friend.
