By newsgame

HM02 Fly allows trainers to fast travel to any previously visited location in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, making it a huge quality-of-life upgrade for traversal and world navigation. It is the only form of fast travel in FRLG, and is therefore quite handy to obtain early on.

This guide covers the exact location where players can find HM02 Fly, the best HM Slaves that can learn Fly, as well as how to use it outside of battle. Here are the details.

HM02 Fly can be found by talking to the girl in the secluded house on Route 16 in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, west of Celadon City. Here’s how to get to this location:

Leave Celadon City through its western exit south of the Celadon Department Store, and you’ll come across a sleeping Snorlax blocking the way on Route 16 (East).

Ignore the Snorlax for now, and look up to find a tree you can cut down using HM01 Cut. After cutting the tree, turn left to find an alternate exit next to the two girls standing by the patch of grass. Defeat the duo in a double battle and go through the building on the left to reach Route 16 (West).

This area only has a single house with a blue roof. Enter the house and talk to the girl inside to receive HM02 Fly.

The sleeping Snorlax blocking the entrance on Route 16 can be woken up by using the Poke Flute. You will get the Poke Flute at the top of the floor of the Pokemon Tower from Mr Fuji as a reward for rescuing him from the Rocket Grunts. You will only be able to access the last floor of the Pokemon Tower by using the Silph Scope, which can be acquired by defeating Giovanni in the Rocket Hideout in the Celadon Game Corner in Celadon City.

In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, HM02 Fly lets players fast-travel to any Pokemon Center they have already been to. To use Fly, you’ll need to teach it to a Pokemon who can learn this move and keep it in your party.

Then, when you want to fast travel to a location, open the pause menu, go to Pokemon, and select the Pokemon that knows Fly in your party. Click on the blue Fly icon to open the Town Map showing all locations you can fast travel to. Select a location, and your Pokemon will Fly you to that location instantly.

Fainted Pokemon can still use HMs and special moves like Dig.

Fly is one of the strongest Flying-type moves in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, making it suitable for main party Pokemon. However, if you do not have a suitable Fly carrier on the team, you’ll need to find an easy-to-get HM slave that can learn this move. Here are some options:

  • Pidgey
  • Spearow
  • Doduo
  • Farfetch’d

Among HM slaves that can learn Fly, Farfetch’d is the best option because it can be taught HM01 Cut as well.
