How to Get and Evolve Mankey
Mankey is a Gen 1 Fighting-type Pokemon that was introduced in Pokemon Red and Blue (and Green in Japan!). You can actually find this Pig Monkey Fighting-type monster pretty early on in Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon LeafGreen (just after beating the first gym leader, Brock). This guide will show players all the locations to find Mankey and how to evolve it into Primeape, its second form.

What Level Does Mankey Evolve into Primeape in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen?
We’ll go over where to actually find Mankey in the section below, but you should know that it evolves into Primeape once it reaches level 28 in FireRed and LeafGreen. You can either raise its level by having it fight in battle or feed it a couple of Rare Candies.
Luckily, you don’t need to raise its level too high or have to find a specific evolution stone like with other Pokemon such as Pikachu.
Once Mankey gets to level 28, it’ll want to learn the move ‘Rage,’ which raises its attack when it gets hit by an opposing Pokemon (it also does 20 damage to the opponent). Primeape will then learn four more moves by leveling up, which are: Seismic Toss (lv 36), Cross Chop (lv 45), Screech (lv 54), and then Thrash at level 63.
Where to Find Mankey in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
There are a couple of spots where you can catch a Mankey in the wild, but the first place you’re likely to find one is on Route 22, which is a path to the west of Viridian City.
This is the first major town you’ll visit after embarking on your journey from Pallet Town. You can also find a Mankey on Route 23, but you won’t be able to access this area until you’re ready to take on the Pokemon League after collecting eight gym badges.
Besides Route 22, you can also find a Mankey on Route 3 and Route 4, just east of Pewter City.
This is the city where you’ll get your first Gym Badge (from Brock), and once you beat him, you can head to the path on the right to reach Route 3, leading you to Mt. Moon, where you’ll have to make the Helix and Dome Fossil choice. Once you exit Mt. Moon from the other side, you’ll end up in Route 4 again, but there will be a patch of grass for you to walk through.

You can also find a Mankey on the first floor of the Rock Tunnel, which has an entrance connected to Route 10 (accessed via Route 9, east of Cerulean City) and another entrance north of Lavender Town.
You can also find Primeape in the wild if you want to catch one without having to evolve Mankey. You can find them on Route 23, the first floor of Cerulean Cave, and on the second floor of Victory Road (accessed after collecting the eight gym badges).
