World of Warcraft’s Transmog System is About to Get More Expensive
The transmog system is getting some changes in World of Warcraft: Midnight, and to fully unlock all the outfit slots available, fans currently need to spend nearly a million gold per character. While this new feature is still subject to change and has a lot of great additions to it, it seems like the transmog system in World of Warcraft could get prohibitively expensive for some players.
World of Warcraft: Midnight is completely overhauling the transmog system. Instead of transmogging individual pieces of gear, fans can set Outfits that automatically change appearance, regardless of equipped items. Additionally, they can use the new Situations function to automatically change their Outfits in different circumstances, including in various types of instances or rest areas, on the loading screen, while using different forms of transportation, when changing a World of Warcraft character’s specialization, or even in different forms for Dracthyr and Worgen characters.
It’s Official: World of Warcraft’s Most Controversial Mount is Back for a Limited Time
One of the most divisive mounts in World of Warcraft history has returned once more, giving players a limited time to add it to their collections.

However, there is a pretty big downside to these adjustments in the form of a high gold cost. Each character starts with two Outfits per character for free, but must purchase additional ones with gold. While the first few will only cost players a small amount, the prices balloon rapidly, ramping up to 100,000 gold for the 20th and final slot. In total, fans would need to shell out 800,000 gold to buy every slot – and to make matters worse, these unlocks are currently character-specific, not account-wide like other things in the World of Warcraft Warbands system.

Beyond this, the only other cost in the transmog system is when someone is setting up an outfit for the first time, rather than every time they change outfits. Unfortunately, this is significantly more expensive than it is in The War Within as well; instead of just under 1,000 gold to completely redo a transmog like it is now, saving an outfit can currently cost well over 6,000 gold in Midnight.
The Void Elf racial ability, Ethereal Connection, reduces the cost of saving over an outfit by 50%, but not the cost of unlocking outfits.
In the long term, these changes could theoretically save players gold, but the exorbitant entry price has many fans more than a little shell-shocked. Luckily, this is also as it is in the World of Warcraft: Midnight beta, so things are still subject to change. Regardless, the Custom Sets function lets players freely save looks similar to how they can right now, but they will still need to spend gold in order to save them in an Outfit slot for use in transmog.
These changes are expected to go live in World of Warcraft with the Midnight Pre-Patch, likely arriving on or around January 20. Fans hoping to provide feedback for this feature should be sure to do so through the ongoing beta.
