I’ve Been Playing Overwatch 2 for 10 Years, and This Is The Weirdest Collab Yet

By newsgame

I never expected Overwatch to become my favorite multiplayer game of all time. Up to the point of its release, I was a fan of straightforward FPS games when it came to multiplayer. The latest Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo, or Killzone game was where I spent a lot of my time, but back in 2016, I was also playing more games than ever before. I had tons of time on my hands since I’d just started college full-time, and if something was even remotely interesting, I’d pre-order it. Overwatch didn’t seem like a game I’d be interested in, but its beta won me over. At that time, I knew nothing about its origins as Project Titan, its colorful cast of characters, or hero shooters in general. But I had fun with the beta, so I was willing to give the game a proper shot.

Fast-forward a decade later and Overwatch remains at the top of my game rotation. I still have my rare Noir Widowmaker skin from pre-ordering, I’m nearing over 2,000 hours of playtime, and I’ve finished every single battle pass for Overwatch 2. I adore this franchise, as I’ve stuck by it through all the highs and lows, from the GOATS meta and new animated shorts to PvE’s cancellation and the introduction of Stadium. As I’ve grown, so has Overwatch, and with that growth has come collaboration opportunities. Thus far, all of Overwatch 2’s collabs have “made sense,” which is why the rumored team-up with Fortnite caught me off guard a bit. I do think the idea has potential, though, and I even think I have a realistic idea of what this kind of collab could include.

Fortnite’s Overwatch 2 collab was shared by reputable leaker ShiinaBR, who has regularly been proven right. However, all leaks should be taken with a grain of salt and aren’t official confirmation by any means.

Overwatch 2’s Fortnite Collaboration Goes Against the Theme

Thus far, nearly all of Overwatch 2’s major collabs have made perfect sense thematically. As a game about superheroes, it makes sense that most of the collabs have focused on properties centered around heroes and villains. The collabs thus far have been as follows:

  • One-Punch Man
  • LE SSERAFIM
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • Transformers
  • Diablo 4
  • World of Warcraft
  • My Hero Academia
  • Persona 5
  • Street Fighter
  • Gundam
  • GI Joe

Of this list, only the LE SSERAFIM collab — the one that brought arguably the most popular and fashionable skins to the game — stands out as random. Perhaps this proves that there’s something to Overwatch 2 thinking outside the box a bit with its crossovers, though it doesn’t make the idea of Blizzard and Epic Games teaming up any less odd. A Fortnite collab likely wasn’t on many players’ bingo cards; it certainly wasn’t on mine. Sure, Marvel Rivals has basically killed my dream of a collab between the comics brand and Overwatch, but there are so many opportunities that make more sense than a Fortnite team-up. Dispatch skins in Overwatch would be phenomenal; Sombra as Invisigal is literally right there. The same goes for Invincible, DC, more anime, and so on. But, if the leaks are to be believed, they’re not next; Fortnite is.

Addressing The Call of Duty: Warzone in the Room

To be clear, Fortnite and Overwatch makes a bit of sense purely because Fortnite has collabed with anything and everything. The art styles do sync up quite well, too, which is another point in its favor. Still, I personally never thought it was possible because of Call of Duty: Warzone, Activision Blizzard’s popular battle royale game. Activision has been quick to leverage all of Microsoft’s properties for the last few years of collabs; Doom, Diablo, and the huge Fallout x CoD crossover that is still ongoing all come to mind. It felt like Overwatch skins were only a matter of time — more military-focused characters like Soldier: 76 and Reaper would fit Call of Duty fine enough, as would outlaws Ashe and Cassidy. Perhaps the Call of Duty community’s pushback on skins that don’t suit the series’ vibe is to blame for it never actually happening, but even then, I’d have expected an Overwatch weapon bundle or something small before a Fortnite collab. Then again, Doom and Fallout have also shown up in Fortnite, so maybe I shouldn’t have been so shocked.

Don’t get me wrong, I still want to see Overwatch x CoD. Imagine a Winston reskin for the Cosmic Silverback in Dead Ops Arcade!

As Unexpected As It Is, Overwatch 2’s Fortnite Collab Has Real Potential

Still, while all the previous collabs made more sense to me — yes, even the K-pop one, especially after I saw the awesome skins tied to it — I can see the vision for this rumored team-up. We currently lack any and all details on what the collab will include, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be mutually beneficial with rewards to chase and cosmetics to purchase across both of these live-service games. As always, the first thing that players will anticipate is the skins, and it’s fairly easy to guess which outfits are most likely for both games.

When it comes to Overwatch 2 skins in Fortnite, the mascots of Blizzard’s hero shooter feel like shoo-ins for the collab. Tracer and Kiriko are hugely popular, recognizable, and consistent skin-sellers. The same can be said for Mercy and D.Va, both of which are iconic and would surely make for some desirable skins. Genji feels like the most likely of the male heroes to make the initial lineup. And with so many memorable Overwatch skins for each of these heroes, there’s plenty of room for alternate styles, too. As for what Fortnite skins make sense for Overwatch 2, some version of Fortnite’s pseudo-protagonist Jonesy would be a natural fit for Soldier: 76. A wacky character like Junkrat would suit a Peely costume, while virtually any of the women would make sense for Cuddle Team Leader. Lastly, Reaper is practically made for a Black Knight skin. Both games always knock it out of the park with their character designs, so skins would surely be a big draw of the collab if it really happens.

As for minor cosmetics, there are plenty of fun opportunities to ponder. Overwatch 2’s charms could house Fortnite items like Slurp Juice and the Battle Bus, while Bastion’s bird Ganymede and the infamous Winton doll would make some stellar back bling for Fortnite. Perhaps Fortnite-themed items could be added to Stadium for a limited time, or one of the map Payload’s could temporarily be swapped out so that players are escorting a Reboot Van instead. On the flipside, iconic Overwatch weapons like Tracer’s Pulse Pistols could enter the loot pool. Overwatch NPCs would be another neat addition to Fortnite’s island, making the collab feel just a bit more special. Ultimately, while there are other collabs that I’d like to see more, this one having the chance to be mutually beneficial is neat. With so many heroes to choose from, too, Overwatch could be the entire focus of a Fortnite Season. How extensive the collab turns out to be remains to be seen, but after my initial shock, I’m pretty optimistic about one of my favorite game’s (supposed) plans.
