Diablo 4 is 11 Seasons Too Late with This New Feature

By newsgame

Diablo 4 Season 11 is bringing a new threat to Sanctuary with its Lesser Evil Invasions mechanic. While Diablo 4 players are no strangers to facing Lesser Evils like Andariel, Duriel, and Belial as Lair Bosses, finding them in places like Helltides, the Pit of the Artificer, and Kurast Undercity will reshape how they approach these activities. Additionally, the fourth Lesser Evil yet to make its Diablo 4 debut, Azmodan, will join the game’s pool of World Bosses, but it may be too late to have the impact it could have had in an earlier season.

While the star of Diablo 4 Season 11 may be the rework of gear upgrade systems like Tempering and Masterworking, this season will also serve as a refresh to long-forgotten mechanics as a whole. Leaderboards are set to return along with the new Tower dungeon, and the Seasonal Journey is being replaced with the Season Rank feature. These changes are likely to make Diablo 4 Season 11 feel very different from any previous season, but may not necessarily be the ideal time to introduce a new World Boss.

Diablo 4 Has Had a Weak World Boss Line-Up for 11 Seasons

  • Ashava, The Pestilent
  • Avarice, The Gold Cursed
  • Wandering Death, Death Given Life

Since the game’s release back in June 2023, Diablo 4 has only had 3 World Bosses. With Diablo 4‘s shift to an open world and emphasis on co-op play, having only 3 World Bosses at launch seemed like a recipe for a new one to be added each season. However, it’s now nearly 11 seasons later, and Diablo 4 players are still fighting the same World Bosses that were around in the game’s early days.

Diablo 4 Season 11 Adds Azmodan as the First Post-Launch World Boss

Making his grand return to Sanctuary in Diablo 4 Season 11 is Azmodan, Lord of Sin and strategist of Hell’s armies. Diablo 3 fans likely recognize this foe, who served as the final boss of Act 3, now returning to fight alongside the other Lesser Evils in Diablo 4. With Azmodan marking the first new World Boss players will have access to since launch, Diablo 4 Season 11 has the opportunity to revive its ailing co-op PvE mode, but a single new World Boss may not be enough to get players to engage with one another.

Azmodan has a spawn timer like the other Diablo 4 World Bosses, but can be summoned directly using the alters found to the south of Zarbinzet.

The addition of Azmodan as World Boss in Diablo 4 Season 11 underscores just how anemic the game’s co-op offerings have been. At launch, Diablo 4 World Bosses were an exciting way for the community to come together to slay powerful foes for rare loot. However, as seasons have come and gone without a new World Boss, the feature has largely fallen by the wayside. With co-op gameplay in Diablo 4 essentially dead, despite Vessel of Hatred adding the Dark Citadel co-op dungeon, a new World Boss in Season 11 feels too little too late.

These days, World Bosses are an insignificant part of Diablo 4‘s endgame loop, since they can easily be defeated with groups of randoms even on the game’s highest Torment difficulty tiers. World Bosses could have been a great way for the community to experiment with different party combinations if more had been released on a more regular seasonal basis, building upon each boss’s mechanics for an increased challenge that encourages co-op gameplay. While the attention given to Lair Bosses in Diablo 4 has definitely helped improve endgame gear farming, it has left World Bosses feeling like a half-measure that was never fully realized, and adding Azmodan in Season 11 is unlikely to aid the mechanic any further.
