The Crucible is a roguelite mode that puts players inside random combat arenas against random enemy combatants. Your goal is simple: defeat all enemies, move through the stages, and slay the final boss. Players bring their entire character into the Crucible, gear and stats included, making it an excellent place to practice combat or push the limits of your build.

How to Unlock the Crucible

Once you reach Sacrament, you should get a quest called Spoken and Unspoken. This will take you to the mason’s house near the town’s cemetery, and under that house is the Crucible Atrium. You’ll meet Elsa, Sacrament’s resident historian, inside the underground chamber. Speak with her, and you’ll unlock the Crucible as part of the quest.

Progression

You’ll get XP when you complete rooms and beat challenging enemies in the Crucible, and you get to keep any items you get during your runs too. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Overall XP gain here is lower compared to a normal run in any of the overworld zones.
  • The Echo Knight boss can randomly drop powerful gear.

The Seneschal

The Seneschal is an NPC vendor who provides a variety of services. Players will meet them once they reach the sixth chamber of a Crucible run, but before they can do anything for you, you’ll first need to get Gloamseeds, which you’ll then use to unlock the Seneschal’s services one by one. You get Gloamseeds every time you finish a Crucible chamber.

If you want to respec in No Rest for the Wicked, you’ll need to unlock one of the Seneschal’s services, then interact with a talking statue in the Crucible Atrium.

Rewards

Speaking of the Seneschal, just reaching their chamber is a reward in and of itself. There are three chests in the safe zone in the sixth chamber of a Crucible run, and you get to keep anything you get from them. If you’re using a low-level character, you’ll want to aim for at least Chamber 6 when doing this activity.

As mentioned above, beating the Echo Knight has a decent chance of yielding powerful gear. However, this boss can be pretty hard to beat on a low-level character. If you want to complete a Crucible run, come back when you’re stronger.
