Turn-Based RPG Is Free to Play on Steam for a Limited Time
Fans of tactical role-playing games are in for a temporary treat, as For the King 2 is currently available to play on Steam for free until November 24. The sequel to 2018’s popular roguelike RPG by IronOak Games, For the King 2 follows directly after the events of its predecessor. It gives fans of the first game the chance to see what happens after they braved the dark tower and confronted the leaders of the Chaos cult. And now gamers can check it out on Steam for free.
For the King 2 builds on the first game’s blend of turn-based combat, exploration of procedurally generated maps, dungeon delving, and of course, roguelite elements. With gameplay inspired by board games, the RPG’s map is made up of hexagonal tiles, with each party member using a turn to move, trade, or initiate fights with enemies. Likewise, battles in For the King 2 are laid out on the grid, similar to games like Jeanne d’Arc and Final Fantasy Tactics, though the characters don’t advance or retreat on the combat screen.

Steam Players Can Try Out For the King for a Limited Time
From November 17 until November 24 at 10 AM PST, gamers can try out For the King 2 for free. During this time, all five chapters of the base game will be accessible, as well as two free DLC chapters and the endless dungeon mode called Dark Carnival. While fans of the genre and anybody who enjoyed the first game probably already know if For the King 2 is a good fit for them, this free-play week is a good opportunity for those who are maybe on the fence. If it turns out that For the King 2 is enticing, this is also also an ideal time to grab a copy to own permanently. The game is currently discounted 60% to $9.99, and all the paid DLC are also available at a reduced price.
This limited-time free access to For the King 2 coincides with the launch of the game’s latest content update, the Fallen Oaths DLC. This includes a new free campaign adventure called “A New Age,” which picks up where the previous update, “Child of Chaos,” left off. Additionally, the Astronomer from the first game will make an appearance as a free playable character, and players will gain access to the Musket weapon set and the Hammer of the Stars loadout weapon, as well as a couple of other goodies.
Besides adding a new biome and enemy factions, the Fallen Oaths DLC makes some accommodations for the new weapons being introduced to the RPG. Ammo has been reworked, as has the way it is displayed in-game. The arrival of the Astronomer in For the King 2 has also brought two new movement attacks called Displace and Converge, with the former pushing enemies and players toward the edges of the combat grid and the latter pulling them toward the center.
The update also makes a few bug fixes, with the devs focusing on softlocks, combat and gameplay issues, and tweaking the UI to make sure elements display correctly. Those interested can also purchase the Fallen Oaths Character Pack, which adds two new playable characters – The Voidwalker and Fallen Knight — , as well as the Lance and Rifle weapon sets, a new follower and mercenary, and a new skin.
Gamers who like to take advantage of free game offers on Steam have a couple of other options available, too. On November 13, both Backyard Basketball ’01 and Backyard Hockey ’02 launched on Steam as free-to-play titles, and those looking for a more epic action RPG vibe need look no further than Where Winds Meet. The open-world adventure by Everstone Studio launched on November 14, and not only does it already have a Very Positive rating with nearly 20,000 reviews, but it’s completely free to play.
