LEGO’s Pokemon Set Is Way Worse Than Mega Bloks
LEGO recently revealed its first Pokemon sets, but some fans think the Pikachu one looks worse than what Mega Bloks has released in the past. While anticipation for these new LEGO products has been high, the reveal left some hoping for more from the one featuring Pokemon’s beloved mascot.
LEGO and Pokemon are among the biggest names out there, so a partnership between the two made sense. However, Mega Bloks originally had a deal with Pokemon, preventing the LEGO company from releasing sets based on the franchise. Only in 2025 did LEGO officially partner with The Pokemon Company, after Mega Bloks lost the rights to the media franchise. Thanks to this new partnership, many LEGO fans will finally have their dream fulfilled of getting official sets based on pocket monsters from the games. While there is no telling how many Pokemon-themed products could be released in the coming years, LEGO has already unveiled three sets coming in 2026.
If LEGO Star Wars’ Millennium Falcon is Any Indication, I’m Sure the Best Bet is to Buy This LEGO Pokemon Set and Do it Now
LEGO’s new Pokemon sets were just revealed, and if you’re on the fence about one of them, the LEGO Millennium Falcon set is why you should buy it now.
LEGO Fans Aren’t Happy With the Pikachu Set
Among the upcoming arrivals, LEGO unveiled Pikachu and Poke Ball. Priced at $199.99 USD, the set is on the expensive side, and some fans think the design is underwhelming. In fact, Reddit posts have started comparing it to older Mega Bloks Pikachu sets. Specifically, the price difference was a significant detractor for many people, as the 2,050-piece LEGO kit came in at over twice the cost. Mega Bloks has released multiple Pikachu sets in the past, but two of the more common are Jumbo Pikachu and Motion Pikachu, which both can still be purchased for under $100. Jumbo Pikachu has 806 pieces and Motion Pikachu has 1,092, putting them at around half the pieces of the LEGO set. While this is likely part of the reason for the price difference, the size of these Mega Bloks sets is similar to LEGO Pikachu.
Pokemon Fans Think LEGO Pikachu Looks “Uncanny” Compared to Mega Bloks
While the price was a sticking point for many fans, this was compounded by what was considered a worse design in some respects. Despite coming with a Poke Ball, the LEGO model of the Electric-type Pokemon looked “uncanny” to some people, particularly in the face. There were also concerns that the blockish body would not be easy to pose when removed from its stand. Furthermore, it is worth noting that when comparing products, Motion Pikachu from Mega Bloks includes a crank that makes the model move, a feature lacking in the more expensive LEGO set.
LEGO’s Eevee Set Looks Better
Even though reception to LEGO Pikachu has been poor, opinions of the Eevee set have been more positive. Coming in at 587 pieces, this set is only $59.99 USD, significantly cheaper than Pikachu and Poke Ball. While the Eevee model is smaller, many LEGO fans have found the design to be more appealing. However, this has led people to question what went wrong with the Pikachu design, especially considering it is the franchise mascot.
Besides these two individual models, LEGO revealed the Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise set. While the designs for these final evolution Pokemon look somewhat similar to their in-game counterparts, the price comes in at a whopping $649.99 USD. This makes it the most expensive set by a wide margin in the line, but it does include 6,838 pieces. In addition to the Pokemon models, the base is divided into three separate areas based on the Water, Fire, and Grass typings of the critters.
It will be interesting to see what impact the negative discourse around the Pikachu set could have on sales when the line releases on February 27. Given the massive popularity of the Pokemon franchise, these new LEGO sets will likely sell well regardless. Unfortunately, scalpers have used this to their advantage by listing sets for huge price increases on eBay.
