Hytale is a huge game with plenty of places to explore, monsters to fight, and stuff to discover. While playing the game solo is completely doable, having a few friends around can make progression feel a lot smoother, the experience more fun, and the challenges less daunting. Despite being an early access game, Hytale is fully capable of providing lobbies for players who want to experience the game with a select few people, and if you’re looking to set a server up for your friends, here’s what you need to do.

How to Play Hytale with Friends Only
In order to create a friends-only Hytale server, you’ll first need to create a world and enter it in singleplayer mode. Once you’ve loaded into the game, do the following:
- Press Escape.
- Select the Online Play option
- Set the Allow Other Players to Join option to On.
- Set a password (optional).
- Set the Include Password in Share Code to On (also optional).
- Press the Save button.
- Once the game generates a Share Code, click Copy to Clipboard.
- Give the Share Code to your friends.
This will turn your singleplayer world into a listen server that anyone with the Share Code can join. You should now be able to explore the world and do stuff together. Your friends only be able to join whenever you’re hosting the game, though.
As stated in-game, the generated Share Code includes your computer’s IP address. Make sure to only give the code to people you trust. Otherwise, your PC might get hacked by malicious actors.
How to Join Friends via Share Code
- Go to the main menu.
- Select the Servers button.
- Press the Join Via Code button.
- Get a friend’s Share Code and paste it into the box that appears.
This should get you into your friend’s server without a problem, provided that there are no complications with your or the host’s NAT types and internet connections. If the Join Via Code option doesn’t work for whatever reason, try the Direct Connect button instead.
If you run into NAT-related connection errors, you or your friends may need to port-forward your routers to 5520. Instructions on how to do this differ per router model. Alternatively, use tunneling apps like Hamachi and Radmin.
Hosting Dedicated Servers
Players who want to host Hytale worlds where everyone can join at any time will need to rent a dedicated server from third-party providers. Pick any trusted provider that allows Hytale hosting, then get your newly-formed server’s IP address. Copy that, then return to the game.
In the Servers menu, click the Add Server button, then paste your server’s address there. Add a name as well as you don’t mix things up. When the server appears on the game’s Servers list, you should then be able to join it. Make sure to send the server’s address to your friends as well.
