“Probably My Favorite Part of Filming This Entire Season” Fallout’s Ella Purnell Talks Iconic New Vegas Moment in Episode 4

Three things are certain in the Fallout world: death, someone saying “war, war never changes,” and taking the wrong shortcut through Quarry Junction in New Vegas. A close fourth would be accidentally becoming chem-addicted on the road to New Vegas, and that iconic moment comes to life in Fallout Season 2, Episode 4. In fact, it comes to life with the funniest possible member of the cast: Lucy MacLean (as played by Ella Purnell).

Game Rant recently spoke with Fallout actor Ella Purnell about Season 2, specifically the moment when Lucy becomes chem-addicted. In short, The Ghoul and New California Republic heal Ella Purnell, but it seems their only option in the Mojave Wasteland is a chem. This causes Lucy to act like an over-the-top addict, culminating in a fun scene in Freeside where she enjoys the act of killing the Kings/Ghouls there. As fans know, this is basically the opposite of who Lucy is. She has struggled to adjust to the brutality of the Wasteland, if not especially the act of killing, and yet she lets loose on the leftover Kings. “I love that sequence. It’s so fun,” Purnell said during our conversation.

Lucy Actor’s Favorite Part of Filming Season 2

Purnell praised the entire sequence, from the moment Lucy comes under the influence of Fallout‘s chems to the slaughter of the Kings and beyond. “Probably my favorite part of filming this entire season was getting to do that because, again, it’s like something you’d never in a million years think Lucy would do. I particularly love the bit where she realizes she’s not herself, and The Ghoul explains to her what’s caused her altered state of mind.” In said scene, Lucy tries to justify continued chem use “fully in the way an addict would.”

Not only is the full scene fun, but it walks the fine line of managing Lucy’s character with an iconic reality of Fallout: New Vegas. “She’s really trying to justify it, which I think is perfect. It’s such good writing. It’s the perfect amalgamation of Lucy genuinely trying to do the right thing, but also tinged by the drugs talking,” as Purnell said. Early reactions to the scene, as well as reviews for Fallout Season 2 so far, echo Purnnell’s sentiment, with many considering the Fallout show as a whole and everything in Season 2 so far being one of the best game adaptations ever.

How to prepare for the second season of Fallout

With the release of Season 2, Episode 4, we are officially halfway through the new season. Only four episodes of Fallout remain, and it’ll be interesting to see how the audience continues to react to the show. Lucy Purnell’s favorite moment of filming has been released, but that doesn’t mean the last four episodes have any less drama, any less Fallout hilarity, or any less impact. As an actor, it only makes sense to enjoy a scene where your character has a complete mental shift like this.
