World of Warcraft Reveals Updated Midnight Transmog Unlock Costs
According to the World of Warcraft: Midnight beta, unlocking all 50 Outfits for an account in the new transmog system will cost just over 2,000,000 gold. However, this steep price tag is only required for fans who want to set up dozens of Outfits for a single World of Warcraft character, as the incrementally increasing price starts out quite affordable.
It is no exaggeration to say that World of Warcraft: Midnight is making some huge changes to the game. New zones and instances, the Haranir allied race, a third Demon Hunter specialization, and an increased level cap are some of the more obvious examples. Still, one of the most impactful fundamental changes comes to a cornerstone of the game: the transmog system.
Believe It Or Not, Someone Has Actually Beaten World of Warcraft: The War Within
Despite being an MMORPG with over 20 years of content, someone has actually completely finished World of Warcraft: The War Within.
World of Warcraft: Midnight Transmog Changes Explained
Instead of transmogging individual items as they do now, characters save appearances to specific equipment slots that automatically change the look of any gear one wears. Doing this allows players to set up Outfits, which can be swapped on the fly without the need to return to a transmog vendor. Characters can have up to 50 Outfits at once, and while the first two are available for free, the others must be purchased with gold. These unlocks are account-wide and start at the low cost of 100 gold, but they eventually ramp up to 100,000 per slot. According to the most recent builds of the WoW: Midnight beta, fashion enthusiasts who want to fully unlock every Outfit on their account will need a total of 2,012,650 gold.

While this may seem like a lot, it is actually significantly cheaper than it was going to be. When the transmog system first appeared on the World of Warcraft: Midnight beta, there were only 20 slots for Outfits available that needed to be purchased individually for each character. Getting all of them costs 800,000 gold, and the prices increased much faster. Considering fans now only need 162,650 gold to get the same number of Outfits on all of their characters, instead of just one, the system is far more affordable now than it was before.
Beyond the Outfit unlock costs, the main gold sink will be through setting up outfits. Saving appearances in an Outfit costs just over 3,000 gold at all levels (about half as much as it was in earlier WoW: Midnight beta builds), rather than scaling with level to about 1,000 gold every time one wants to change their look as it is right now. However, there is no cost to swap between saved Outfits once they are set up, and individual pieces can be edited for a fraction of the gold.
Ethereal Connection, the Void Elf racial ability, reduces the cost of saving appearances to an Outfit by 50%, but it does not affect Outfit unlock costs.
Of note, Outfits are completely separate from Custom Sets, the name being given to the current system of saving appearances. Players can still make any number of these Custom Set transmogs at no cost, though they cannot switch to them freely without applying them to an Outfit. All existing transmogs that fans have created before these changes will be automatically saved as Custom Sets.
Beyond this, players can also enjoy the new Transmog Situations feature. An Outfit can be manually switched to through a button or hotbar command, but it can also have triggers set to swap when certain Situations are met, such as mounting, jumping into the water, swapping specializations, or entering certain types of instances, including WoW‘s new Housing areas. There are no additional gold costs associated with applying Situations to an unlocked Outfit.
Fans don’t need to wait until Midnight releases on March 2 in order to start enjoying these transmog changes. This system overhaul is coming as part of the World of Warcraft: Midnight Pre-Expansion Update on January 20. While these numbers could technically change before then, there is a good chance these are the costs the feature will ship with.
