Hide and Seek with Oliver Guide In Baldur’s Gate 3

By newsgame

In Baldur’s Gate 3, players can come across a ruined house, “The House with Flowers,” that still has an occupant. This occupant is Oliver, a Tiefling child who is unusually lively for someone infected with the shadow curse.

In fact, Oliver seems unaware that there’s anything wrong at all, and he wants to play “Hide and Seek” with the party when they arrive. If the party agrees, they can get a useful magic item from Oliver. If they don’t, they’ll have to fight a potentially difficult battle with his “family.” Finding Oliver without a fight isn’t hard, but only if Baldur’s Gate 3 players know exactly what to do as they progress toward the second act. Here’s how to play with Oliver in BG3 and win the hide-and-seek game with Oliver.

Updated on December 23, 2025, by Nahda Nabiilah: While exploring the Shadow-Cursed Lands in BG3, players will stumble upon a strange humanoid child called Oliver. He says he’s seven years old and likes to play games with his “family.” Oliver then invites Tav to play with him a game of Hide and Seek. The first round is easy enough, but in the second one, players need to succeed without getting caught to earn their reward.

How To Beat Oliver At Hide And Seek In BG3

First, while players can learn a bit more about Oliver’s situation by passing Arcana and Insight checks, no dialog option will let the party skip Hide and Seek. And if players don’t play along, Oliver will get angry and have his family attack the party.

For the first game, Oliver will turn invisible and hide behind the cart in front of the house (X:57, Y:29). Players can see which direction he goes by watching the word “Invisible” run out of the house. A party member must then go to the cart and pass a Perception check to spot Oliver, but this check is fairly easy.

At this point, Oliver will get upset that the party beat him so quickly and demand a second game. If players refuse, the family will show up and attack. If you agree, Oliver will up the stakes: not only does the party have to find Oliver, they also have to avoid his family.

make one party member hide in bg3

To avoid getting spotted, players should do either of these before the game begins:

  • Take the other party members away from the area. For example, next to the nearest waypoint. This is the safest way not to get caught.
  • Alternatively, move the other party members inside the house and hide in the corner.

Turn-based mode will start automatically when Oliver starts the second game of Hide and Seek, so dash inside to the spot where Oliver first appeared (X:79, Y:36). Don’t follow him, as you might get caught by one of Oliver’s family members.

Now, wait two turns for Oliver to come.

After one round of waiting, Oliver will start running back into the house, and after two rounds, Oliver will be standing in his old spot (X:79, Y:36). Players must wait for him to get there because party members can’t speak with him until he stops running.

Speak to Oliver, and the boy will be angry at having lost twice, but he’ll give the party a prize anyway. This prize is the Ring of Shadows, which lets the wearer cast Pass Without Trace once per day. If players get caught and have to fight the shadow family, Oliver will still give the party his “second-place prize,” which is also the Ring of Shadows.

If you pickpocket the Ring of Shadows from Oliver, winning the game will grant a non-magical Silver Band as the quest reward instead.

If players refuse to play Hide and Seek, or if they get caught during the second game, Oliver’s family will attack the party. They consist of “Mummy”, “Daddy”, and “Doggy”. The two parents are greater shadow creatures with an aura that invokes the strengthened Shadow Curse in a radius around them. This deals Necrotic damage to anyone who gets too close, unless players have some protection from the effect. Aside from the curse, the parents like to teleport onto the roof and attack party members.

The Doggy is closer to a lesser shadow in its stats. It has fewer hit points, but it likes to run in, attack someone, then turn invisible and run off. A powerful light source can help keep it from disappearing each time.
