Pokemon GO is seemingly never running out of things to do, ensuring that its player base is constantly engaged with new things to do from events or Pokemon to capture.
Community Day in Pokemon GO gives players the opportunity to log in during a certain window one weekend a month to catch a featured Pokemon in the wild. In fact, Pokemon GO recently celebrated its December 2025 Community Day, which takes place over both Saturday and Sunday to offer every Pokemon that was featured in each month during the year. It acts as a handy end of year recap, while also giving fans who may have missed any of them another chance to take part. With January now rapidly approaching, Niantic has revealed all the details for its next event.
Pokemon GO Finally Adds Its Most Requested Feature, But There is a Huge Catch
Pokemon GO just added one of its most requested features, but it is going to require a lot from players to use.
- January 18, 2026 from 2pm–5pm local time
To kick off the new year, Niantic is featuring the Chimp Pokemon Grookey for its January 2026 Community Day. The event begins on Sunday, January 18, 2026 and runs for 3 hours from 2-5pm local time. Grookey was originally introduced as the grass starter option in Pokemon Sword and Shield and the Galar Region. Grookey was also joined by other new starters, like the water lizard Sobble and soccer-playing fire rabbit, Scorbunny.
For Pokemon GO Community Day, players will be seeing Grookey appearing frequently in the wild, along with its shiny variant and some with a special background. Players will also be able to unlock the Frenzy Plant charged attack provided they evolve Grookey into Thwackey and then Rillaboom during the event window, or up to 4 hours after it has ended. Niantic has also confirmed that the charged attack Drum Beating will also be available to learn, which hits for 60 damage and lowers the opposing Pokemon’s attack power by 1 stage.
However, that’s not all! Niantic will be offering a special January Community Day field research which could lead to more Grookey encounters as well as other rewards like Ultra Balls, Stardust, and more. For players that want to increase their chances of finding a shiny in Pokemon GO, using a Lure Module on a PokeStop will also give an increased shiny chance as well as a Grookey with a unique background. There’s a variety of Event Bonuses that will be active during this time as well.
