PS Plus Extra Game for December 8 Asks the Bold Question, “What if a Demon Made of Glass Wanted to Shred the Moon?”

By newsgame

It’s been a busy year for PlayStation Plus, as the subscription service has been ramping up the variety of games offered. Between indie titles like Balatro and Still Wakes the Deep and AAA heavy-hitters like GTA 5, PlayStation Plus has maintained a solid roster this year. Although the game lineup is constantly changing, each month is usually filled with great choices, and December is no different.

On December 8, PlayStation Plus is set to get a bold new game that combines mind-bending visuals with an even wackier story. The title is Skate Story, and while skateboarding is a key component of the game, it’s far more than a run-of-the-mill skating game. Its premise involves demons, doing the bidding of the Devil, and even a personal grudge with the Moon. Skate Story is a day-one PS Plus game, and for those looking for something truly unique, this may be the perfect game to jump into.

Skate Story is All About a Glass Demon Trying to Destroy the Moon

Skate Story is far from the formula of past skate games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. It’s a unique journey through a twisted and visually captivating underworld that uses skateboarding mechanics in new and inventive ways. The protagonist is an unnamed demon who is “made out of glass and pain.” The protagonist makes a deal with the Devil, who gifts them a skateboard. While the main character is a mysterious figure, it’s at least known that the Moon is the source of this demon’s pain. The Devil’s deal requires the protagonist to reach the Moon, skate the celestial body, and eat it, which will free the character from their pain. Simple.

Saving Lost Souls One Kickflip at a Time

While on this epic journey to shred the Moon and devour it, players will get to explore nine layers of a mysterious and hellish underworld that is far more than the usual fire and brimstone. As one works to become a more capable skater, each improvement brings the protagonist a step closer to completing their mission, but there are plenty of obstacles along the way. Boss fights, other lost souls that need saving, and a frog with a really bad memory are just a few of the encounters that players will face, and it’s up to the heroic skater to take down enemies and help those in need before reaching the Moon. PS Plus’ December game list is a diverse roster, and Skate Story brings even more uniqueness to the offerings.

Skate Story is Made Up of Outside-the-Box Storytelling, Surrealist Visuals, and Third-Person Action

The surrealist beauty of Skate Story isn’t just eye-catching. It’s an innovative way to approach skate mechanics to create something that stands completely on its own. With franchises like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Skate, the environments and storylines are far more grounded in reality, even if players can pull off outlandish combos. There isn’t really any other skate-based game around that involves a pain-riddled demon trying to take down the Moon. While some locations around Skate Story‘s map are more traditional city street environments, some locations look like something out of a fever dream, requiring players to think outside the box when it comes to finding places to grind and kickflip.

Despite its Complete Overhaul of the Formula, Skate Story Still Boasts Staple Features of the Genre

  • A strong soundtrack that helps bring the game’s world to life
  • Board customization
  • Skate challenges that help players level up
  • Emphasis on creative combos

These are all essential pieces of the skating genre that will still feel familiar to longtime skateboarding fans. This blend of wild storytelling and classic features gives Skate Story a sense of familiarity while still promising an experience that doesn’t feel like any other skate game. If skating were taken out of the equation and replaced with more traditional third-person action controls, it would still be an incredibly compelling premise.

Even if someone hasn’t been fond of skate games in the past, Skate Story is showcasing the genre in a brand-new light. The Devil, a pain-inflicting Moon, and an underworld filled with bizarre characters definitely aren’t common in the world of skate games, and that may prove to be Skate Story‘s biggest strength when it launches on PS Plus.
