Best Build for Mercenary in Ghost of Yotei Legends

By newsgame

Mercenary is one of the four playable classes in Ghost of Yotei Legends. Similar to the Ronin class from Ghost of Tsushima Legends, the Mercenary focuses on utility while still dealing serious damage. However, this class also introduces several new abilities that make it more aggressive than its predecessor.

Choosing the right abilities, perks, and gear is important if you want to perform well in tougher content such as Survival or Raids. The guide below covers the best build options to help you get the most out of the Mercenary class.

Mercenary starts with the Spirit Throw ability, which allows you to conjure a weapon and throw it at enemies. This ability has a 30-second cooldown and can feel weak early on. The alternative ability, Spirit Animal, poisons nearby enemies and causes them to become staggered.

Despite this option, it is best to stick with Spirit Throw because it works extremely well with Mercenary’s passives. The Pressure passive increases the stagger damage of thrown weapons by 20%, while Deft Onslaught reduces Ghost Tool cooldowns whenever you kill an enemy with a thrown weapon.

For perks, select the third option in Perk 1, Ability Cooldown, which reduces the cooldown of your class ability. For Perk 2, choose the first option, Spirit Shatter, which causes thrown weapons to shatter on impact and apply the Weaken effect. With these upgrades, Spirit Throw becomes significantly stronger and turns Mercenary into a powerhouse that constantly staggers enemies, making the Spirit Animal ability far less useful in comparison.

Mercenary also has one of the biggest changes from the previous game when it comes to the Ultimate ability. In Ghost of Tsushima Legends, the Ronin could revive all downed allies using Breath of Izanagi, but the Mercenary instead has a more offensive ultimate.

The Takemikazuchi’s Smite ultimate deals massive damage to enemies and forces them to drop their weapons, which you can then pick up and throw at other enemies. The best Ultimate perk to select is Weakening Blast, which causes enemies hit by the ability to become Weakened and Poisoned. This leaves them vulnerable and allows you to quickly finish them off with your upgraded weapon or perform easy assassinations.

When it comes to gear, you should prioritize strong Ghost Tools because they benefit directly from the Deft Onslaught passive. Tools such as Kunai and Smoke Bombs are especially useful since they allow you to deal with ranged enemies and quickly control groups of opponents.

Since bows require you to stop and aim, which slows down the pace of combat, it is usually better to let the Archer class handle ranged damage. Instead, consider bringing Concussion Bombs or Blind Bombs to maintain crowd control and keep enemies staggered.

After completing the Story missions, you can switch to Story Quickplay on higher difficulties. These modes grant more XP, allowing you to rank up faster and unlock the perks and passives needed to complete this build.
