Best Zeal Paladin Build in Diablo 4

By newsgame

The Zealot archetype for the Paladin class in Diablo 4 leans heavily toward melee combat with a focus on critical hits. The builds players can make using the effects that fall under this category might not be as flashy as some others, but Zealot builds are still quite strong, and they can be seriously spectacular too. Here’s a Zeal Paladin build for Diablo 4 that offers good mobility, survivability, and crowd control without relying on Arbiter Form.

Pros

Cons

Fast and hard-hitting

Very low Faith usage

Guaranteed crits with extreme crit damage

Melee

Requires perfectly-rolled gear

Zeal costs health to cast

This build uses the Red Sermon Unique 2H Sword to boost Zeal’s damage by a ridiculous amount. The weapon will give you all the stats you want for a Zeal build, but more importantly, it will grant you the Death or Glory upgrade for free.

In case you were wondering, Death or Glory is one of the upgrades for Zeal that turns it into a circular AoE ability that drains your health in exchange for dealing more damage and getting more Critical Strike Chance. We’ll be focusing every part of our build on supporting Zeal, turning our Paladin into a walking blender that’s constantly healing itself.

While you won’t exactly be squishy with this build, you’ll still be prone to getting instantly killed by area attacks since it requires you to be up in an enemy’s face.

Active Skills

  • Zeal – Cull the Wicked (5/5)
  • Falling Star – Fanatic Descent (1/5)
  • Fanaticism Aura – Rite of Vengeance (5/5)
  • Defiance Aura – Rite of Prayer (1/5)
  • Consecration – Hallowed Ground (5/5)
  • Zenith – Empyrean Edge (5/5)

For PC players, bind Zeal to LMB, then hold down LMB to move. When you need to attack, press Shift to attack in place. This should give you better control over your movement. Alternatively, try using the Keyboard Movement control scheme.

Zeal is our bread-and-butter skill, and with the Cull the Wicked upgrade, it will deal more damage against Weakened enemies. Defiance Aura is our only ability here that does not inflict Weaken, so you won’t need to worry about missing out on damage.

Falling Star – Fanatic Descent is our main mobility skill. Use it to apply Weaken and jump from pack to pack. When facing Elites/Champions, consider saving this to avoid incoming damage.

Fanaticism Aura is here to boost our attack speed and crit stats, while Defiance Aura provides us with some much-needed damage reduction and passive healing. Feel free to activate both when you need to apply Weaken or gain Unstoppable.

Consecration – Hallowed Ground helps us maintain our health while also applying Weaken. This skill is crucial for boss fights, as without it, you will likely end up draining your entire health bar, leaving you with no HP to cast Zeal.

Zenith – Empyrean Edge is mostly for mobility and crowd control. Its second strike will knock enemies down, giving you a brief window of opportunity to melt dangerous Elites/Champions before they can use their abilities. Replace this with Fortress if you plan on fighting Lair Bosses.

Put one skill point into any Basic Skill. You won’t be able to progress through the skill tree otherwise.

  1. En Garde
  2. Discipline
  3. The Best Offense
  4. Fortitude
  5. Crack in the Armor
  6. High Charity
  7. Iron Sharpens Iron
  8. Press the Advantage
  9. Break the Line
  10. Shining Armor
  11. Giant Slayer

To sum these passives up, they’ll boost both your offensive and defensive stats, especially when you critically hit enemies who have been Weakened. Put three skill points in all of these passives, but if you’re just leveling up your Paladin in Diablo 4, prioritize investing in active skills first.

Use Varyana as your main Mercenary (for attack speed and Vulnerable application) and Raheir as your Reinforcement. Bind Raheir’s Bastion to one of your Auras or your chosen Ultimate.

Paladin Oath

Since we’re using mostly Zealot skills, we’ll naturally be using the Zealot Oath so we can take advantage of Fervor. The latter does nothing on its own, but it synergizes with Legendary Aspects, and when we have full Fervor, all of our attacks will echo, dealing additional damage for each stack of Fervor we have.

At max Fervor, we will gain Fortify equal to 1% of our Maximum Life. This lets us take advantage of some of the passive skills listed above while also giving us more health regeneration to offset Zeal’s health cost.

Use Emeralds on your weapon, Rubies on your armor, and whatever gems you need to compensate for missing resistances on your Jewelry. Make sure to leave some space for your favorite Runewords; CirGar is recommended if you can’t reach 100% crit chance through gear.

Jacque’s Fervor, Penitent, Revelator’s, and Zealot’s Covenant Aspects are all for increasing your damage with Zeal, while Heavenly Strength and Disobedience increase your damage resistance. Aspect of Militance can be replaced with something else (Heir of Perdition is the ideal choice) if you feel like the Fortify you get from Zealot’s Oath and other sources is enough.

Flickerstep helps keep Zenith off cooldown, allowing you to zip through rooms and slam Elites/Champions to the ground more often. You can replace this with Penitent Greaves for better Zeal damage.

You’ll want to get a Red Sermon with as many Ancestral Affixes as possible. Preferably, get one with improved Life on Hit and Chance for Zeal to Deal Damage Twice stats.

If you’re playing during Season 12, keep an eye out for Bloodied items that can increase your damage/survivability. Bloodied Helmets that increase your Strength per Killstreak rank are particularly useful.

Preferred Armor Stats

  • Maximum Life
  • Strength
  • Life on Kill
  • Attack Speed and Crit stats (Gloves)
  • Healing Received
  • Fortify Generation
  • Movement Speed (Boots)

Preferred Jewelry Stats

  • Maximum Life
  • Ranks to Iron Sharpens Iron (Amulet)
  • Critical Strike Chance
  • Critical Strike Damage
  • Attack Speed
  • Life on Hit

Use the Tempering system to fill in any gaps you might have with your gear. Take note that you only need 60% Critical Strike Chance to reach 100% crit with Zeal, as Death or Glory provides you with an additional 40% whenever you lose Life. Consider using Locran’s Talisman if you find yourself overcapping on crit chance.

  2. Preacher — Spirit
  3. Castle — Chip
  4. Fervent — Honed
  5. Endure — Outmatch

Nothing special here; all Legendary Nodes and Glyphs for this setup are all for boosting your damage output. If you’re lacking damage or survivability, take the appropriate nodes until you’re satisfied with the results.
