Where to Use Lockbox Keys in Marathon

While completing contracts or exploring the different zones in Marathon, players may come across lockboxes that cannot be opened without a key. These containers are part of special loot rooms scattered across the maps and usually contain multiple items that can be collected during a run. To open them, players must first obtain a Lockbox Key, which can either drop randomly from containers or be purchased from a faction armory after unlocking the required upgrade.

Since the loot inside these rooms is randomized, there is no guarantee that you will walk away with high-value items. Still, if you manage to get a key, it is worth tracking down one of these rooms. The guide below explains how to obtain Lockbox Keys and where to use them in Marathon.

How to Get & Use Lockbox Keys in Marathon

As mentioned above, Lockbox Keys can drop randomly from containers, meaning there is no reliable way to increase their spawn rate during a run. However, there is a more consistent method that involves the Cyac faction.

After unlocking Cyac and completing its introductory contract, you will gain access to faction upgrades. One of these upgrades is called Locksmith, which allows players to purchase Lockbox Keys directly from the faction armory. This upgrade requires Rank 4 with Cyac, so you will need to complete a few faction contracts before it becomes available.

Once the Locksmith is unlocked, head to the Armory, where you can purchase a Lockbox Key using specific salvage items and Credits. After buying the key, place it in your backpack along with the rest of your loadout before starting a run. Keep in mind that Marathon does not have a secure item slot, meaning if you get knocked out during the match, you will lose everything you brought with you, including the Lockbox Key. Because of this, it is best to avoid unnecessary fights while carrying one.

Once the match begins, your goal is to look for major landmarks across the map and watch for a red flare rising into the sky. This flare indicates the location of a Lockbox room, where several lockboxes can be opened using your key. Be careful when approaching these locations. Many players know about these rooms and may camp nearby waiting to ambush other Runners who arrive with keys. It is a good idea to scout the area before entering.

The Thief Runner Shell’s Pickpocket Drone can be especially useful here. While its main purpose is stealing high-value items from other players, it can also be used to survey the area safely, allowing you to check for enemy Runners before committing to the loot room.
