How to Get a Lucky Egg Chansey in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

By newsgame

In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Lucky Egg can only be found as a Held Item on a Chansey in the Fuchsia City Safari Zone. Since moves like Thief cannot be used in the Safari Zone to steal a Pokemon’s Held Item, the only way of getting the Lucky Egg is catching a Chansey that is holding it.

However, Chansey has an encounter rate of 4% in the FRLG Safari Zone, and every Chansey only has a 5% chance of holding a Lucky Egg, making it doubly difficult to find this elusive item. Even more troublesome is the fact that even if you do find a Chansey holding a Lucky Egg, catching it is another matter entirely, as it has a catch rate of 30, making it almost as difficult to pin down as a legendary.

As stated before, Lucky Egg can only be found as a Held Item on Chansey in the Safari Zone of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. To increase the odds of finding a Chansey in the Safari Zone, players can take the following steps:

  • Put a Level 26 Pokemon in the lead of the party.
  • Place a Pokemon that knows Surf in the party.
  • Purchase a few Max Repels from the Pokemon Mart.

To catch Chansey, here’s what you need to do:

  • Pay the 500 Poke Dollar entry fee to enter the Safari Zone.
  • Go to Area 2 (location shown above).
  • Stand in a patch of grass and start turning your character model in different directions without moving from the tile until you trigger an encounter.
  • If it is Chansey, throw baits and balls in the following order:

    • Turn 1: Bait
    • Turn 2: Bait
    • Turn 3: Ball
    • Turn 4: Ball
    • Turn 5: Ball
    • Turn 6: Bait
    • Turn 7: Ball
    • Turn 8: Ball
  • After the first three Baits, keep cycling between three Balls, one Bait, followed by two Balls, one Bait, followed by three Balls, one Bait, and so on until you either catch the Chansey or it flees.

After the Chansey is caught, check whether or not the Chansey was holding a Lucky Egg by going to the PC, or checking your party if there was an empty spot that the newly captured Chansey was able to occupy. If not, repeat the process from the start.

In FRLG, Repel prevents all Pokemon that are a lower level than the lead party Pokemon from appearing as wild encounters. This means if you have a level 26 Pokemon in the lead, all level 25 and below wild encounters will no longer appear for as long as the Repel is active.

Chansey appears in two areas in the Safari Zone.

  • In Center Area (Entrance), Chansey appears at level 23 with a 1% spawn rate. There are eight other encounters that appear in this area that are at the same or higher level than Chansey.
  • In Area 2, Chansey appears at level 26 with a 4% spawn rate. There are seven other encounters in this area that are at the same or higher level than Chansey.

Using Repel with a level 26 Pokemon in the lead in Area 2 will give you the highest possible chance of finding a Chansey, which is the entire purpose of the previous setup.
