Resident Evil 7: What Happened to Zoe Baker?

Resident Evil 7 focuses a lot on the Baker family, but the fate of Zoe Baker is definitely something that’s worth diving into.

Updated on February 17, 2026 by Jessica Orr: Although there aren’t many differences in the two different endings of Resident Evil 7, there is a canon “good” ending that you should aim for if you’re planning on playing Resident Evil: Village soon after, to get the full context of how RE7 is supposed to end. However, there are Achievements/Trophies attached to each ending, so you should plan to do both if you want to 100% the game, or just want to see what could have happened if you made different decision. To help you out, this guide has been updated with pictures and more information to make it clear how to get each ending in RE7, and just what each affects exactly.

When to Save

Resident Evil 7‘s story splits off at a very specific part of the game, so for those that want to see both endings with minimal legwork, it’s important to know where to save the game so you don’t have to start it over from the beginning. You’ll be able to access a save room right before reaching the Boat House area, and this is where you’ll want to create an extra save file before progressing.

You reach this save room right before yet another Jack Baker fight, so make sure you have sufficient healing items and ammunition before you attempt to see the endings.

After defeating Jack Baker (again), you’ll now have the serum necessary to cure the disease plaguing the family. However, there’s only one serum left, so you’re left to decide whether you should give it to Mia Winters or Zoe Baker. This is the moment in the game where the story branches off into two paths, and what choice you make here cements which ending you get.

How to Get Ending 1 in Resident Evil 7

To get Ending 1, or the “good” ending in Resident Evil 7, Ethan needs to give the serum to Mia instead of Zoe. Doing this will trigger a cutscene that then leads to a section in a large shipwreck, and from there to the end credits, you can do whatever you want, and it won’t change the ending of the game. Seeing this Ending 1 unlocks the Achievement/Trophy called “End of the Night.”

In order to see Ending 2 and unlock the Achievement/Trophy called “Just A Memory Now,” you need to give the serum to Zoe instead of Mia. To do this, load your save right before the Boat House section. If you don’t have a save here, you need to load a save further back and play the game until you reach the serum decision. And if you don’t have any saves before this point, you’ll have to start all over again.

Don’t worry, the gameplay of both sections is largely unchanged, and in fact, the two paths are almost identical, but there are some notable exceptions.

Differences Between the Endings in Resident Evil 7

There isn’t much difference between the two endings of Resident Evil 7. Here’s the short list of what does actually change:

  • Either Mia or Zoe will be on the boat escaping the swamp, depending on who you save.
  • You learn about Mia being on the tanker with Eveline quicker if you choose to save Zoe.
  • Zoe is calcified on the boat with Ethan if you choose to save Zoe.
  • You have to fight Mia on the tanker if you choose to save Zoe, and Mia will calcify here.
  • Mia is on the stretcher in the helicopter at the end of the game if you save her.
  • Ethan looks at a video of Mia, then throws it out of the helicopter if you save Zoe.
  • Ethan’s last two sentences at the end of the game change depending on who you save.

What is the Canon Ending of Resident Evil 7?

To get the canon ending of Resident Evil 7, you have to save Mia. As she and Ethan start as a happy family at the beginning of Resident Evil: Village, we know that you’re supposed to give the serum to Mia and escape with her on the helicopter at the end. Although we were left guessing for a while, as Ethan rudely says on the boat to Mia: “Who the hell else was I going to choose?”
