Konami Has Bad News for Xbox Players

By newsgame

After years of fan speculation and anticipation, Konami, Annapurna Interactive, and Screen Burn finally unveiled Silent Hill: Townfall, the next mainline entry in the iconic survival horror franchise, but Xbox fans may not want to get too excited because Townfall will be skipping Xbox consoles at launch. Silent Hill: Townfall is presently slated to launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 consoles and for PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, yet there is no official word on how long Xbox players will have to wait before they too will be able to enjoy the newest horrors of the Silent Hill universe.

Platform exclusivity is certainly far from a new concept. The earliest home consoles offered by Nintendo, Atari, Sega, Sony, and others all offered games that were limited to specific hardware, largely due to the landscape of video game development from the 80s through the mid-2000s. As time went on, studios began releasing games across platforms, driving profits and drawing in more fans to liven-up online multiplayer titles and more. Despite the modern normalcy of video games launching on a variety of systems, certain partnerships have continued to prioritize platform exclusivity, and it would seem Konami and PlayStation are once again teaming up to keep the console release of Silent Hill: Townfall out of the hands of Xbox users, at least for now.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Studio Finally Unveils Its Mysterious Countdown Clock Project

After weeks of anticipation, the studio behind the Silent Hill 2 remake finally reveals the project teased by a mysterious countdown clock.

What Platforms Will Silent Hill: Townfall Launch On?

  • PlayStation 5
  • PC (Steam, Epic Games Store)

According to the official Konami website for Silent Hill: Townfall, the highly-anticipated survival horror game will be launching for PlayStation 5 and PC in 2026 but will skip Xbox systems. Xbox fans no doubt recall the PS5 launch exclusivity of the Silent Hill 2 remake, though many were pleasantly surprised to see Silent Hill f making its way to Xbox fans at the same time as its other launch platforms. Silent Hill 2 had a roughly year-long exclusivity deal with PlayStation, forcing Xbox fans to either grab the game on a different system or wait for SH2 to finally release on Xbox. At the moment, it looks like a similar exclusivity deal may be implemented for Silent Hill: Townfall, though things may change as more details about the game and its official release date are revealed.

Some fans had predicted that the Silent Hill remakes by Bloober Team would receive PS5 exclusivity deals, while newer games in the franchise, like Silent Hill f, would launch across platforms day-one. However, that anticipated pattern has already been broken by Silent Hill: Townfall, leaving Xbox fans unable to anticipate which upcoming Silent Hill games may or may not be skipping their favorite consoles. It is worth noting that Silent Hill: The Short Message, the newer first-person free-to-play release in the series, also launched as a PS5 exclusive, and remains so at the time of writing. With Silent Hill f realistically being the only exception, there is no observable pattern in the platform exclusivity of modern Silent Hill releases, which may complicate things for horror fans on Xbox.

The Silent Hill games are a great example of why many players dislike platform exclusivity, though others would argue it keeps the console hardware space more competitive and rewards brand loyalty. Whether these are things that game developers should consider when deciding release strategies remains a point of debate, and fans are often left simply keeping their fingers crossed that they will eventually be able to play some of their most hyped games. The story and setting of Silent Hill: Townfall have already stirred up a buzz among franchise fans and newer players, so it should come as no surprise that Xbox fans are feeling lost in the fog with the PS5 exclusivity news. Silent Hill: Townfall launches in 2026 for PC and PS5, with a future release on Xbox uncertain.
