The Witcher Remake Release Window Teased

By newsgame

The release window for The Witcher Remake has reportedly been pushed back by a year, according to a Polish financial report that covers CD Projekt Red stocks. The report stated that CD Projekt Red initially targeted a different release window for The Witcher Remake, though that will not be the case moving forward.

The report came over three years after CD Projekt Red announced it was remaking the first entry in The Witcher game series. First released on PC in October 2007, The Witcher is an action RPG that gives players control of Geralt of Rivia, a monster slayer for hire. Having no memory of who he is, Geralt is tasked with pursuing the Salamandra, a gang that laid siege to the mountain fortress Kaer Morhen that Geralt and his fellow witchers call home. Although The Witcher was first made using BioWare’s Aurora Engine, CD Projekt Red confirmed that The Witcher Remake will be developed using Unreal Engine 5.

The Witcher Remake Potentially Delayed to 2028

Though its development remains ongoing, fans may be waiting a bit longer to get their hands on The Witcher Remake. As posted by Witcher 4 News on Twitter, a financial report from Mateusz Chrzanowski of the Polish financial firm Noble Securities claimed that The Witcher Remake had been pushed back to 2028. The report stated that CD Projekt Red had initially targeted a potential 2027 release, though that window has shifted. Additionally, Fool’s Theory, the main developers behind The Witcher Remake, had reportedly been reassigned to work on The Witcher 4. Ergo, this shift in personnel has slowed down any work on The Witcher Remake. Noble Securities is a Polish brokerage firm and investment bank that covers stocks from companies like CD Projekt Red.

The former 2027 release window would have allowed The Witcher Remake to launch on the 20th anniversary of CD Projekt Red’s Witcher game franchise. Given that The Witcher Remake‘s release window has been moved back by a full year, a trailer is not likely to appear anytime soon. With Fool’s Theory now moving over to work on The Witcher 4, the budget for the upcoming sequel from CD Projekt Red will likely grow in response. In January 2026, Noble Securities reported that the budget for The Witcher 4 could reach approximately $800 million, with game development and marketing taken into consideration. By comparison, the budget for Cyberpunk 2077 was an estimated $441 million for its marketing and development.

The Witcher Remake’s Loss May Be The Witcher 4’s Gain

With The Witcher Remake seemingly put on the shelf for now, the additional help from Fool’s Theory could be a boon for The Witcher 4‘s ongoing development. Given that The Witcher 4 could have two additional sequels as part of a new trilogy, CD Projekt’s plans for The Witcher franchise are ambitious. With The Witcher 4 now having extra developers on board, it may not be much longer before another trailer or news of the game’s development reaches fans. Given that The Witcher 4‘s only trailer to date premiered during the 2024 edition of The Game Awards, it remains to be seen when CD Projekt Red will show more footage.

However, fans of The Witcher series may still receive something to play in 2026. Rumors of a potential third content expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have circulated on social media, despite the fact that the game has not received any extra content since its Next-Gen Update in December 2022. As of this writing, CD Projekt Red has not officially revealed if The Witcher 3 will get a third expansion following the Next-Gen Update. However, with the knowledge that The Witcher Remake has reportedly been pushed back to 2028 at the earliest, time will tell what CD Projekt Red will do to keep fans interested in the series.
