How to Break Bars in God of War Sons of Sparta

By newsgame

In God of War: Sons of Sparta, you’ll often run into obstacles that impede your path, whether it be suffocating toxic mists, intangible platforms, or, in some cases, a simple set of metal bars. While many puzzles are solved by exploring your immediate vicinity, others may require a new tool or ability to complete.

Shortly after Kratos obtains the Solar Sling, you’ll start to find yellow contraptions on walls and ceilings that can be shot, often causing a nearby gate or platform to activate. Some levers, however, are placed behind bars that are seemingly impenetrable – or are they? This God of War: Sons of Sparta guide will show players how to obtain the Ray of Light upgrade and break through bars with the Solar Sling.

The shadow-dropped God of War: Sons of Sparta is surprising by its very nature, but one member of its central cast is especially meaningful.

How to Upgrade the Solar Sling with Ray of Light in God of War: Sons of Sparta

Reaching The Sanctuary

To break through bars with the Solar Sling, you’ll first need to obtain the Ray of Light upgrade. To accomplish this, you must first obtain an Undying Hyacinth from the Sacred Monument in The Sanctuary.

Kratos and Deimos’ search for their friend, Vasilis, will lead the pair to the Port of Messenia. From there, players may choose to take a boat to the Isle of Aeaea or head upwards toward The Sanctuary. Climb the scaffolding in the Port Town of Messenia to reach the Eurotas River region and continue left until you reach The Sanctuary. You’ll know you’re heading in the correct direction if you pass the Temple of Nike along the way.

Upon entering The Sanctuary, head to the left-most area of the room. You’ll see a stone fountain of a woman pouring an urn in front of a path that appears to be a dead-end. Approach the wall on the left and break it by attacking with your spear. The broken wall will reveal a hidden pathway that leads to the Sacred Monument.

Interact with the Sacred Monument to obtain the Undying Hyacinth. Now, you’ll need to head back to the Temple of Apollo and offer it to the center altar to upgrade your Solar Sling.

Before leaving The Sanctuary, make sure to progress the story by meeting The Oracle. This will unlock the Temple of Nike nearby, granting you another fast travel point and a much quicker method of returning to the Temple of Apollo.

Once upgraded, the Solar Sling can pierce through metal bars with the Ray of Light ability. With the Solar Sling equipped, hold L2 and press Square to shoot a beam of sunlight and puncture through obstacles.

Ray of Light isn’t the only upgrade you’ll receive after offering the Undying Hyacinth to the Temple of Apollo. Upgrading your Solar Sling will reward you with three new attacks:

  • Sun Stone (R2) — Launch a stone projectile embodying the heat of the sun.
  • Ray of Light (L2 + Square) — Launch a projectile at the speed of light to pierce objects and enemies.
  • Solar Storm (L2 + Triangle) — Unleash a barrage of solar projectiles to annihilate enemies.

With an upgraded Solar Sling, Kratos can vanquish his foes with the power of the sun while reaching contraptions previously unavailable to him. Other obstacles, like thorn patches, can be cleared with the Evergreen Flame.
